Randolph, Vt. – Entrepreneur Norbert Ender decided it was time to try his luck outside of Chittenden County. After operating Speaking Volumes in Burlington for 21 years, he set his sights on a former grain mill in Randolph for another store.
“It's a really nice friendly community,” he says.
Norbert points to a new restaurant next door, the Chandler Center for the Arts down the street, and the Playhouse Movie Theater across the road.
“People from the whole region kind of come around and they wander and discover town.”
So last year he told his credit union, Green Mountain Credit Union, about his plans to buy the building. They put up some financing and brought VEDA into the deal.
“VEDA put up 40% of the purchase price and the interest rate's much better too than to the bank.”
Norbert already had all the inventory in Burlington. It just took time to unpack it all and get everything set up. He says the store broke even this winter.
Norbert may be excited about his latest venture, but his adult daughter is not so sure.
“My kid's not happy that I took this on. ‘Oh, that's not you scaling back’,” he laughs. “She thought I would sort of age out of this whole thing, but I think I have one more project in me. I don't want to sit in the park feeding pigeons just yet.”
Instead, he will keep selling books, music, clothing, antiques, and art and enjoy Randolph.
