East Montpelier, Vt. – Green Mountain Ice Manager Denver Heath loves hockey. When we met at the company’s East Montpelier facility to talk about the growing business, Heath was hoarse.
“My voice is terrible. I went to the Montreal game on Sunday, and I was screaming and yelling.”
But for Denver (pictured on right), hockey is more than a passion, it led him to his profession – making ice. Three central Vermont businessmen, including Denver’s hockey coach from Spaulding High School, approached him with an idea in January 2021.
“They knew somebody that was selling Lucky Day Ice and they called me and asked if I wanted to come in and help them grow it and build it.”
“I've known Denver his whole life,” says Adam Martin, a co-owner of Green Mountain Ice and owner of Miles Supply where he
works with Denver’s father. “He was a great leader on the hockey team. Just a really solid, well-rounded individual. I knew he had great work ethic, could be trusted, and he wanted to be local.”

At the time, Denver was a senior accounting student at UMass-Lowell living at home and taking classes online because of COVID.
“It worked out that I was able to be in Vermont when they purchased the company to help learn everything,” says Denver.
They renamed it Green Mountain Ice, Denver took the helm, and now business is booming. You can find their bagged ice all over Vermont and northern New Hampshire.
“Mostly gas stations and convenience stores, a couple of restaurants. We do a lot of events like weddings, the Vermont Brewers Festival on the waterfront, Vermont City Marathon, Vermont State Parks,” explains Denver.
And Adam Martin says VEDA deserves part of the credit.

Adam has a long-standing relationship with Community National Bank. When he approached them about buying the ice company, they suggested getting a loan from VEDA.
“I think it's important for companies to know more about VEDA,” says Adam. “They’ve been an integral part of our success. I would highly recommend businesses and startups to consider VEDA. It's been great!”
