The King Arthur Flour Company, Inc.

The King Arthur Flour Company, Inc. is America’s oldest flour company, founded in Boston in 1790 to provide pure, high-quality flour for residents of the newly-formed United States.

For more than 200 years, the company has produced flours held to the highest industry standards — free of unnecessary chemicals, never bleached, and never bromated.

In 1984, King Arthur’s headquarters were moved to Norwich, Vermont where they opened the King Arthur Flour Baker’s Store in 1992. In 1995, the store moved into a newly built 16,600 square foot timber frame structure. The Norwich campus has since become a baker’s paradise, home to not only The Baker’s Store, but also the King Arthur Bakery, headed by Certified Master Baker Jeffrey Hamelman, and the Baking Education Center, where King Arthur offers hands-on classes for everyone from children to professional bakers. Through its subsidiary, The Baker’s Catalogue, Inc., King Arthur also operates a mail-order catalogue and website offering flour and other baking supplies. Since 1990, the Baker’s Catalogue has grown into the largest circulation catalogue for home bakers in the nation. King Arthur’s warehouse and distribution center is located in Hartford, just a few miles down the road from the Norwich campus.

With VEDA’s help in the form of a $10 million tax-exempt Recovery Zone Facility Bond (RZFB), purchased by Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., King Arthur was able to undertake a multi-phase facilities improvement project, including expansion of the company’s Norwich flagship retail store, café, baking education center, and baker. The project began in June 2011 and is scheduled for completion in June 2012.

King Arthur Flour Company, Inc. has more than 200 employees, a number expected to grow by 25% within three years of the expansion project.
